Geography and environment

Vilas County occupies a landscape of mixed hardwood and conifer forests, wetlands and numerous inland lakes. These freshwater bodies and connected streams support fishing, boating and wildlife habitat, and they shape seasonal tourism. The county's natural setting is typical of the northern Great Lakes region and plays a dominant role in land use and local identity.

History and development

The county was formed in the late 19th century and was named for a prominent national figure of that era. Settlement and early economic activity focused on logging, small-scale agriculture and servicing transportation routes. Over time, recreational use of lakes and forests grew, attracting visitors and seasonal residents and transforming parts of the local economy toward hospitality and outdoor services.

Economy and recreation

Tourism is a major economic driver: fishing, boating, snowmobiling, hunting and trail-based recreation bring visitors year-round. Local businesses include lodging, restaurants, outfitters and guide services, alongside traditional forestry and small manufacturing. Eagle River hosts several winter and summer events that draw regional crowds.

Government, demographics and community

Local government is organized around a county board with services for roads, public safety, land use and parks. The population is dispersed across small towns and unincorporated areas, with a mix of permanent residents and part-time property owners. Demographic patterns reflect the rural, recreation-oriented nature of the county.
