Overview

Viessoix was a small rural commune in the Calvados department of northwestern France. Historically part of the former region of Basse-Normandie, it functioned as an independent municipal unit until the mid-2010s. Today it is recorded as a former commune in administrative sources and local references.

History and administration

On 1 January 2016, Viessoix was merged with several neighbouring communes to form the new commune of Valdallière. This reorganisation followed national policies encouraging small municipalities to combine under the "commune nouvelle" framework, with the aims of streamlining administration and strengthening local public services while preserving communal identities.

Like many settlements in Normandy, Viessoix developed around agricultural activities and parish life. The local landscape is typically pastoral, with mixed farms, hedgerows and traditional houses that reflect regional building traditions.

Practical responsibilities such as planning, civil registration and some educational or social services have been assumed by the Valdallière municipal council. Nevertheless, village associations and community events often continue to operate at the former-commune level, maintaining local ties and traditions.
