Geography and landscape

The locality is situated in the Normandy countryside of the French northwest. The surrounding landscape is typical of the region: a mix of hedged fields, pastures and orchards that characterize much of the Pays d'Auge and the broader Calvados area. This setting supports mixed agriculture, including dairy and fruit production, activities closely associated with the cultural identity of the district.

Administration and recent change

Administratively, Vieux-Fumé was one of many small communes that retained local governance structures until recent territorial reforms. As part of reforms encouraging consolidation, it became part of a larger communal entity on the date above. References commonly describe it as a former commune to reflect this change in status. The reorganisation also occurred in the context of the 2016 regional reform that reunited Upper and Lower Normandy into the single region now commonly called Normandy.

Characteristics and local life

  • Rural character with agricultural landscapes and small-scale farming.
  • Local architecture and landmarks tend to reflect traditional Norman styles.
  • Community life often centers on nearby market towns and the larger commune administrative services in the new structure.

Significance and context

Although small, places like Vieux-Fumé illustrate common features of French local administration, rural economy and cultural geography. They are part of the patchwork of villages and hamlets that contribute to regional products and tourism in northwest France. For current administrative details and services, residents now look to the governing structures of Mézidon Vallée d'Auge and departmental authorities in Calvados.
