1 ImageOverview of career
Staartjes combined competitive experience with organizational and leadership roles within Dutch sailing. His public profile rests on two milestones: competing at the Olympic regatta in 1972 and leading the Dutch sailing delegation in 1980. Those years bookend a long involvement in sailing at national and international levels and reflect the common pathway from athlete to team official.
Olympic participation and leadership
At the 1972 Olympic regatta, held in the Baltic port of Kiel, Staartjes was part of the Netherlands' sailing contingent. Ten years later, he returned to the Olympic scene as Chef de Equipe, a senior team-manager role responsible for athlete selection logistics, on-site administration and coordination with event organizers and national authorities. The 1980 Games were politically sensitive and the sailing events were organized in Tallinn, separate from the main host city.
Role and significance
The title Chef de Equipe denotes a mixture of sports administration, technical oversight and athlete support. In this capacity Staartjes would have overseen coaching staff, equipment arrangements and daily team operations during the regatta. His movement from competitor to manager mirrors a wider tradition in sailing where experienced sailors bring practical knowledge to team leadership.
Legacy and context
Staartjes is remembered within the Dutch sailing community for his steady contributions across several decades. While not widely known beyond sailing circles, his career illustrates how former athletes shape national programs and mentor later generations.
