Early life and cowboy roots

Born in Foraker, Oklahoma, Johnson grew up on ranches and learned traditional cowboy skills at an early age. His rodeo success and horsemanship led to work as a stuntman and extra in Westerns; those practical abilities—riding, roping and handling livestock—distinguished him from many contemporaries who relied on stagecraft rather than lived experience. The solidity of his background made him a natural fit for directors looking for realism.

Film career and screen persona

Johnson built a reputation as a laconic, dependable supporting actor and occasional lead. He often played stoic cowboys, seasoned ranchers or hard-bitten deputies rather than flamboyant heroes. While he appeared in numerous Westerns and other films, two roles stand out: his work in the Clint Eastwood–era Western Hang 'Em High and his Oscar-winning turn in The Last Picture Show. Over the years he collaborated with prominent filmmakers who valued his authenticity and experience.
