Vaugondry — former municipality in Vaud, Switzerland

Characteristics

Like many small Swiss communes, Vaugondry was primarily rural in character, with agricultural land, scattered houses, and local community institutions. Local government typically consisted of a municipal council and an executive body responsible for communal services, planning and maintenance. The village preserved a local identity that continues within the larger municipal structure after the merger.

History and merger

On 1 July 2011 Vaugondry joined with three neighbouring communes — Fontanezier, Romairon and Villars-Burquin — to form the new municipality of Tévenon. This consolidation followed a wider pattern in Switzerland of municipal mergers aimed at improving administrative efficiency, pooling services, and responding to demographic and financial pressures faced by very small communes.

Significance and present status

Although Vaugondry no longer exists as an independent administrative unit, its name and local traditions remain part of the identity of the Tévenon municipality. Administrative records, cadastral information and local archives are preserved under the new municipal administration. The change illustrates how Swiss local government adapts through voluntary mergers while attempting to maintain local heritage.
