Overview
Varkaus is a town in the region of Northern Savonia in Finland. It has been an established local centre for industry and services. The municipality recorded a population of about 22,100 people in early 2014 according to local statistics (population data), though like many regional towns its population has fluctuated since then.
Geography and setting
Varkaus lies in the Finnish Lakeland, a landscape of lakes, islands and narrow straits. The town grew where waterways and forested hinterlands meet, and its location has long shaped transport, industry and settlement patterns. The surrounding lakes and channels remain important for recreation, freight and local identity.
Historical development
The town expanded with industrialisation: sawmilling, pulp and paper operations and related metalworking businesses were important drivers of growth. Over time Varkaus developed municipal services, cultural institutions and residential areas to support an industrial workforce. The neighbouring former municipality of Kangaslampi was consolidated into Varkaus on 1 January 2005, reflecting municipal reforms and regional administration changes.
Economy and services
Varkaus's economy has traditionally been linked to the forest industry, including wood processing and paper production, complemented by light manufacturing and service-sector employment. Local employers have made use of the town's transport links and harbour facilities. Public services, schools and cultural venues serve both town residents and people from the surrounding countryside.
Transport and connections
Besides road connections that link Varkaus with other parts of Northern Savonia, the area is served by a small regional airport, Varkauden lenteasema, which is located in nearby Joroinen. Waterborne transport remains a feature of the area, with local harbours and leisure boating on the lake network.
