Variable nebula
A variable nebula is a reflection nebula whose brightness and shape change over time due to variations in its illuminating star or moving dust. They offer clues about young stars and circumstellar environments.

Some well-known instances are Hubble's Variable Nebula (NGC 2261), illuminated by the young star R Monocerotis, and Hind's Variable Nebula (NGC 1555), associated with the T Tauri region. These objects have been photographed and monitored for more than a century, revealing evolving structures and sometimes rapid changes that challenged early static views of nebulae.
Importance and observation
Monitoring variable nebulae helps astronomers probe circumstellar disks, shadowing phenomena, and episodic accretion in forming stars. They can be followed with modest telescopes and repeated imaging, making them accessible targets for both professional and experienced amateur observers. Distinct from emission nebula variability driven by ionization changes, variable nebulae are primarily a record of changing illumination and intervening dust.
