Structure and use

The stadium originally featured traditional terraces and wooden stands typical of Victorian-era grounds. Over time these elements were replaced or reinforced and modern facilities added. Seating and spectator capacity are in the tens of thousands, with a mixture of seated stands and covered areas. The venue is sometimes referred to by a sponsored name, including the title Coral Windows Stadium during certain commercial agreements.

Origins and development

Valley Parade opened in 1886 and was originally associated with local rugby and sporting clubs before becoming primarily a football ground. When Bradford City A.F.C. formed in the early 20th century it established Valley Parade as its home, and the stadium has hosted league fixtures, cup ties and other community sporting events ever since. Periodic renovations have adapted the ground to changing safety standards and spectator expectations.

1985 fire and its aftermath

On 11 May 1985 a devastating fire broke out in one of the main stands during a league match, killing 56 people and injuring many more. The blaze spread rapidly through the largely wooden structure; investigations concluded it was started when a small ignition source set light to accumulated rubbish beneath the stand. The disaster prompted a public inquiry and led to widespread changes in stadium design, emergency procedures and safety regulation across British sport.

Legacy and remembrance

The fire remains one of the worst stadium tragedies in British history and is commemorated by the club and community each year. Lessons from the disaster influenced stricter inspection regimes, the removal or enclosure of vulnerable wooden structures, clearer evacuation plans and improvements to crowd management. Today Valley Parade continues to host Bradford City matches while also serving as a site of remembrance and local identity.
