Overview
Vaginal lubrication is the moistening of the vulva and vaginal canal that commonly accompanies sexual arousal. It reduces friction during intercourse or other genital contact and helps protect delicate mucous membranes from irritation or tearing. The acidity and microbial community (dominated by lactobacilli in many people) help limit growth of pathogens. Sexual arousal changes the quantity and sometimes quality of secretions; cervical mucus related to ovulation is distinct from arousal-related lubrication and is more relevant to fertility.
Common causes of reduced lubrication
Periods of low lubrication (often called vaginal dryness) can result from hormonal changes (menopause, postpartum, breastfeeding), medications (some antidepressants, antihistamines), medical conditions (autoimmune disorders, diabetes), cancer treatments, stress or insufficient sexual stimulation. Lifestyle factors such as smoking or excessive alcohol can also contribute.

Treatments range from nonprescription aides to medical therapies. Over-the-counter water-based, silicone-based and oil-based lubricants provide immediate, short-term relief during sexual activity; water- and silicone-based products are commonly recommended for use with condoms (oil-based products can degrade latex). Vaginal moisturizers are intended for regular use to maintain moisture between episodes of intercourse. When dryness is related to low estrogen, topical or systemic estrogen therapies prescribed by a clinician can restore tissue health. People should choose products without irritating fragrances or additives if they are sensitive.
