Overview

Unknown Hinson was the stage name of Stuart Daniel Baker (born November 7, 1954). He built a public career as a singer, guitarist and entertainer who adopted an exaggerated, comic hillbilly persona. Outside of his live shows and recordings he became widely known to television audiences as the voice of Early Cuyler on the animated Adult Swim series Squidbillies. He died in November 2022.

Persona and musical style

Performing as Unknown Hinson, Baker combined elements of country, rockabilly and psychobilly with parody and theatrical presentation. His act featured a deliberately old-fashioned, Southern-inflected vocal delivery, sharp guitar work and stagecraft that included stylized costume and makeup. The result was music that mixed genuine instrumental skill with tongue-in-cheek humor and pastiche.

Voice acting and television

Hinson’s most prominent voice role was Early Cuyler, the patriarchal lead in the adult-oriented animated comedy Squidbillies. His distinctive, drawling voice and comic timing helped define the character and exposed his work to a broader, national audience beyond his live-music following. The role remains a notable crossover between niche music performance and mainstream animated television.

Career highlights and legacy

Over several decades Baker released recordings, toured nationally and cultivated a devoted cult following. Critics and fans often noted the contrast between his skilled musicianship and the satirical, sometimes outrageous stage persona. He is remembered for bringing a unique blend of musical craftsmanship and comic character work to both live performance and voice acting.
