Tyresta National Park

The Swedish National Park Tyresta is located southeast of Stockholm in the municipalities of Haninge and Tyresö.

It is located in a glacially formed hilly area with primeval coniferous forests and stone boulders covered with lichens. Sand flats and lakes have formed in the crevices of the former rocky mountains. The Tyresta National Park is home to around 80 species of birds, including the capercaillie and various woodpeckers and owls.

In 1999, about ten percent of the national park fell victim to a fire that completely burned out not only the vegetation but also the underlying peat layer. Some of the traces of this fire were still visible decades later. However, the ecosystem as a whole not only recovered from the catastrophe, but is now considered more diverse and species-rich in this part of the park than before the fire. The fire also proved to be a stroke of luck for archaeologists, who gained insight into numerous new Stone Age sites beneath the burnt peat layer.

At the entrance to the national park is an information centre that showcases all of Sweden's national parks. There is also a farm here where rare Swedish breeds of domestic animals are kept.

Tyrestahällen (no. Sö 270) is a runic inscription northwest of Tyresta by.
