History and development

The three places have distinct origins: Gdańsk grew as a medieval Hanseatic port with a layered civic history; Sopot developed as a 19th‑century seaside resort known for spas and a wooden pier; and Gdynia expanded rapidly in the 20th century as a modern port. Gdańsk later became prominent in 20th‑century politics as the cradle of the Solidarity movement, which had wide influence across Poland and beyond.

The regional economy blends maritime industries, logistics, tourism and services. Popular visitor attractions include historic architecture and museums in Gdańsk, the spa and promenade in Sopot, and the port and modernist interwar waterfront in Gdynia.
