Thomas Allen "Timothy" Brown (May 24, 1937 – April 4, 2020) was an American professional athlete who later pursued careers in music and acting. Born in Richmond, Indiana, Brown gained public recognition first as a National Football League player and later as a character actor. He is often credited under the names Timothy Brown or Timmy Brown.
Football career
Brown played professional American football as a back and return specialist for several teams. During his NFL tenure he suited up for the Green Bay Packers, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Colts. Known for his athleticism and versatility, he made the transition from the playing field to the entertainment world after his football career wound down.
Acting and music
Following professional sports, Brown pursued work in both music and on screen. He recorded songs and performed as a singer, and he appeared in television series and films across a variety of genres. His most widely recognized screen role was as Capt. "Spearchucker" Jones on the television series M*A*S*H, a character introduced in the program’s early episodes. That part brought him national visibility, although the character was written out after the program’s initial run of episodes.
Notable roles and public image
Brown’s presence in entertainment was shaped by the combination of his athletic background and his relaxed, affable on‑screen persona. He booked roles in television dramas and films and was sometimes cast where a strong physical presence and natural charisma were desirable. He remained identified with his M*A*S*H role throughout his later career and in public memory.
Legacy and death
Timothy Brown’s career crossed sports and popular culture at a time when athletes increasingly pursued secondary careers in media. He died on April 4, 2020, in Palm Springs, California, at age 82 from complications related to dementia. His life is remembered for the uncommon combination of professional athletics, recording work, and acting that kept him in the public eye across several decades.
