Legal career and positions

Zavascki had a long career in Brazil’s judicial system. Before joining the Supreme Federal Court he served as a minister of the Superior Court of Justice (Superior Tribunal de Justiça) from 2003 until 2012. In 2012 he was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Federal Court, where he took part in deciding constitutional and criminal appeals and in shaping jurisprudence at the national level.

Role in the Operation Car Wash cases

At the time of his death Zavascki was the rapporteur for several appeals originating from Operation Car Wash (Operation Car Wash), the wide-ranging investigation into corruption, money laundering and influence‑peddling that implicated politicians, businesspeople and public officials. As rapporteur he was responsible for preparing reports and guiding the Court’s consideration of complex procedural and evidentiary questions arising from those cases.

Death and subsequent inquiries

On 19 January 2017 Zavascki died in a small aircraft crash off the coast near Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. He was 68. His death interrupted the Supreme Federal Court’s immediate handling of the appeals he supervised and prompted formal investigations into the circumstances of the accident by aviation and judicial authorities. The crash drew national attention given the significance of the matters he was overseeing.
