Overview
A swirly (also called a swirlie) refers to a hostile prank or act of hazing in which someone is forced to place their head into a flushed toilet. It is generally classed as a type of bullying, intended to humiliate the target and can occur in schools, team locker rooms, or other group settings.
Depictions and debate
Swirlies are commonly shown in films, television programs, and other fiction, where they appear as a recognizable symbol of schoolyard cruelty. Because of their frequent appearance in media, some observers have questioned how often swirlies actually occur in real life versus being exaggerated or popularized by storytelling.
Risks and responses
When swirlies do happen, they can be more than an embarrassment: forced immersion in a toilet presents hygiene concerns and, in extreme cases, physical danger. Schools, parents, and authorities typically treat such incidents as forms of harassment or assault and respond with disciplinary measures and, depending on circumstances, legal action. Prevention focuses on anti-bullying education, supervision, and clear policies for reporting and addressing abuse.
