Geography and environment

The province lies on the low, fertile plains that characterize much of southeastern Cambodia. Rice paddies and other agricultural land dominate the landscape, interspersed with small towns and seasonal wetlands. Its location along the international boundary with Vietnam shapes local ecology and land use, with irrigation and water management important to farming communities.

Administration

Administratively, Svay Rieng is divided into several districts and municipalities. The province contains six rural districts and two municipalities, including the municipalities of Svay Rieng and Bavet. History and development

Like much of Cambodia, Svay Rieng has roots in the historic Khmer polities and later experienced changes under French colonial administration. In the late 20th century the province, which sits on an international boundary, was influenced by regional border dynamics and national reconstruction. Since the 1990s it has gradually seen increased economic activity tied to trade with Vietnam.

Economy and transportation

Agriculture—especially wet-rice cultivation—remains the foundation of the local economy. In recent decades Bavet has grown as a gateway for cross-border trade, transport, and services, including markets and entertainment venues that attract visitors from both sides of the border. A principal national road links the province with Phnom Penh and the border crossing, supporting passenger buses, freight, and regional commerce.

Society, culture, and notable facts

The population is predominantly Khmer and observes national festivals such as the Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben. Proximity to Vietnam influences local cuisine, language contact, and business ties. Svay Rieng is notable for its role as a border province—serving as both an agricultural heartland and an emerging corridor for trade and cross-border interaction in southeastern Cambodia.
