Overview
Sud-Est (South-East) is a Romanian development region established in the late 1990s to support regional planning, statistical reporting and the management of European Union structural and investment funds. It is not an administrative unit with legislative powers but serves as a framework for coordinating development projects, economic strategies and cross-border cooperation in the southeastern portion of the country.
Composition and main centres
The Sud-Est region comprises six counties. Its urban network includes major port and industrial cities as well as smaller towns that act as local service centres. Counties commonly associated with Sud-Est are:
- Brăila
- Buzău
- Constanța
- Galați
- Tulcea
- Vrancea
Constanța and Galați are among the region's largest cities; Constanța hosts Romania's principal Black Sea port and significant transport links.
Geography and environment
Sud-Est includes coastal landscapes along the Black Sea, floodplains and deltaic areas where the Danube meets the sea, and inland hills and plains. The Danube Delta, partly within this region, is noted for its biodiversity and protected wetlands. These natural features shape local economies and land use patterns, and they are a focus for conservation and sustainable tourism initiatives.
Economy and infrastructure
The region's economy is diverse: maritime trade and port activities, river transport, industry and light manufacturing, agriculture and increasingly tourism around coastal resorts and natural areas. The Port of Constanța is a strategic logistics hub for freight and maritime services. Infrastructure projects and investments supported through regional development mechanisms aim to improve roads, ports, environmental protection and workforce skills.
Role, history and cooperation
Created as part of Romania's preparations for European integration, Sud-Est exists to coordinate programmes across county boundaries and to absorb and implement EU funds. It also takes part in cross-border and transnational cooperation with neighbouring countries and regional bodies. For more information about projects and regional plans, see the Sud-Est Development Region portal.
Notable facts: the region blends important commercial infrastructure with sensitive natural habitats, requiring integrated development approaches that balance economic growth, transport needs and environmental conservation.
