Sotir Ferrara (5 December 1937 – 25 November 2017) was an Italo‑Albanian Catholic prelate best known for his leadership of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi in Sicily. Born in the town of Piana degli Albanesi, he became a prominent figure within the Arbëreshë community — the Italo‑Albanian minority that preserves an Eastern Christian liturgical heritage in Italy.

Role and responsibilities

Ferrara was appointed to the episcopate by Pope John Paul II on 15 October 1988 and thereafter served as bishop of the eparchy. In that capacity he guided clergy and laity in maintaining the Byzantine Rite practice in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, promoted pastoral care adapted to a minority community, and represented the eparchy in wider ecclesial and cultural dialogues.

Historical and cultural context

The Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi is part of the Italo‑Albanian (Arbëreshë) Catholic tradition, a group that traces its origins to Albanian refugees who settled in southern Italy and Sicily from the late Middle Ages onward. This Church preserves Byzantine liturgy, local languages and customs while remaining united with the pope. Ferrara’s ministry emphasized safeguarding these rites and the Arbëreshë language as living elements of communal identity.

Activities and significance

During his episcopacy Ferrara acted as both a religious leader and a cultural steward. His work included overseeing liturgical life, supporting clergy formation, and fostering contacts with Orthodox and Catholic partners on questions of liturgy, pastoral care and minority rights. He was regarded as a bridge figure between the Italo‑Albanian faithful in Sicily and Christian communities across the Adriatic.

Death and legacy

Sotir Ferrara died in Tirana, Albania, on 25 November 2017 at the age of 79. He is remembered for decades of service to the Arbëreshë Church and for efforts to sustain a distinct liturgical and cultural heritage within the broader Italian and Catholic contexts. The eparchy he led remains centered in Piana degli Albanesi, Sicily, and continues to be one of the principal expressions of the Italo‑Albanian Catholic tradition in Italy.
