Sölvesborg

This article is about the place. For the municipality see Sölvesborg (municipality).

Sölvesborg is a place (tätort) in the Swedish province of Blekinge län and the historical province of Blekinge. It is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

The Ljungaviken housing site in Sölvesborg shows traces of 8000 years of use. Iron Age traces can be found to the northeast in the Skebbas Rör burial ground.

The origins of the city lie in the Middle Ages. The only building still standing from that time is the Nikolai Church, built around 1300. A large part of the city centre still reflects the medieval street layout. In the middle of the 19th century, Sölvesborg experienced a boom as the centre of a region with many distilleries.

In Sölvesborg there is also a 6th century rune stone, the Stentoften Stone. Its inscription translates as "To the inhabitants of Nihua and the bystanders of Nihua Hådulf gave a good year." The rest is unintelligible. An addition reads: "I, master of the runes carved powerful runes here. Forever afflicted with grief, to death shall fall he who destroys this monument."

In the summer, Sölvesborg is a tourist magnet. In addition to the attractive surroundings, various festivals are responsible for this, such as Killebom with a medieval market and other cultural performances, or the Sweden Rock Festival.
