Throughout its history Sivasspor has moved between the Turkish professional divisions. In the 2000s the club established itself more regularly in the Süper Lig, the top tier of Turkish football. One of the club’s most notable domestic achievements came in the 2007–08 Süper Lig season, when Sivasspor finished fourth, a position that secured qualification for European competition for the first time.

That league placing allowed Sivasspor to participate in the UEFA Cup (now called the UEFA Europa League). The club’s first European fixture came against Montenegrin side OFK Grbalj, marking a milestone in Sivasspor’s sporting history and exposing the team to continental competition for the first time.

Sivasspor’s supporters are known for passionate backing at home matches and for a strong local identity. The club is often portrayed as one of the leading provincial teams outside Turkey’s major metropolitan centers, representing Central Anatolia in national football.
