Silver Spring is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the U.S. state of Maryland. Located just north of Washington, D.C., it functions as a suburban center with a busy downtown, varied neighborhoods, and a mix of residential and commercial areas. As of a 2013 estimate the community had about 76,700 residents and is one of the most populous places in the state.

History and name

The settlement began in the 19th century after newspaper publisher Francis Preston Blair established a residence near a small local spring. The spring—said to contain mica that made the water sparkle—gave the place its name. The commonly cited founding date is 1840, and the area grew from a rural crossroads into a streetcar suburb and later a regional urban node.
