Overview
Barnes County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county seat and largest city is Valley City. According to the 2010 census, 11,066 people lived in the county. Basic administrative and mapping information is available through local and state resources: county map and overview and a broader state reference.
Geography
The county lies in eastern North Dakota and includes rolling farmland, river valleys and patches of native prairie. The Sheyenne River flows through the area, shaping local wetlands, bluffs and recreation corridors. Much of the land is devoted to cultivated fields, pasture and shelterbelts that form the rural landscape.
History and settlement
Indigenous peoples lived on these plains and valleys prior to Euro‑American settlement in the 19th century. Later settlement and town development were influenced by agriculture and the arrival of rail lines and roads that linked farms to regional markets. Small towns grew as service centers for surrounding agricultural townships.
Economy and demographics
The local economy is dominated by agriculture, including grain and livestock production, and by associated services such as grain handling, equipment supply and transport. Population density is low compared with urban areas and communities tend to be small towns and rural townships. Official population and demographic details are available from census sources: 2010 census data.
Government, education and services
County government and primary administrative offices are located in Valley City, which also hosts educational institutions and local cultural amenities. Valley City is the center for county courts, public records and many services; more information about the city is available at Valley City resources. Local school districts, emergency services and town governments manage day‑to‑day community needs.
Transportation, culture and recreation
Road and rail corridors provide connections to regional markets and neighboring counties. Residents and visitors use river corridors, parks and community festivals to enjoy outdoor recreation and local heritage. Regional guides and state overviews offer further reading on attractions and services: state and regional information.
