Geography and landscape

Sigulda occupies part of the deep Gauja River valley, an area of sandstone cliffs, mixed forests and river meanders. The landscape creates varied microclimates and visible geological formations, with walking trails and viewpoints linking riverside parks to higher plateaus. The town is often described as a gateway to the wider protected area of Gauja National Park.

History and built heritage

The area around Sigulda has medieval origins: ruins of a Livonian Order castle sit above the river and nearby Turaida Castle and estate reflect centuries of regional history. Over time the town developed around these landmarks and later expanded as a resort and local administrative centre. A cable car, manor houses and park-like promenades attest to 19th- and 20th-century leisure and estate landscapes.
