Sigmund Steinnes.jpg

Sigmund Steinnes (19 January 1959 – 15 November 2018) was a Norwegian politician affiliated with the Labour Party. He served in local and national roles during the 2010s, most notably as mayor of the Storfjord municipality and later as a deputy representative to the Parliament of Norway from the county of Troms.

Early life and background

Steinnes was born in Nordnes, Norway, and pursued a political path within the Labour Party. While detailed public biographies of his youth and private life are limited, his electoral success reflects local engagement and recognition in northern Norway. His career illustrates a common route in Norwegian politics from municipal leadership to involvement at the parliamentary level.

Political career

In the 2011 local elections Steinnes was elected mayor of Storfjord, a role that places responsibility for municipal administration, services and local development in the hands of the elected head of the municipal council. In 2013 he advanced to national politics as a deputy representative to the Storting, the Norwegian Parliament, for Troms. A deputy representative (vararepresentant) is elected to step in when a full member is absent or assumes a government position.

Significance and activities

As mayor Steinnes would have presided over municipal meetings and represented Storfjord in intermunicipal matters, while his position as deputy representative linked local concerns to national debate. His public service was rooted in the Labour Party's social-democratic tradition and focused on issues of relevance to northern municipalities, including local services, infrastructure and regional development.

Death and legacy

Steinnes died on 15 November 2018 in Oslo from pancreatic cancer, at the age of 59. His passing was noted in regional and national outlets, reflecting his standing as a local leader and participant in parliamentary work.
