Overview

Line 4 of the Barcelona Metro, commonly called the línia groga or yellow line, runs between Trinitat Nova and La Pau. Operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), it forms a lateral corridor that links several residential districts with central areas and parts of the waterfront. The line includes both underground and above-ground sections and is used primarily for frequent urban commuter service.

Route and characteristics

The route crosses diverse urban landscapes, from dense historic neighbourhoods to redeveloped coastal zones. Station designs and platform arrangements vary accordingly, with compact underground stops in older quarters and more open or elevated platforms where the line emerges above street level. Train sets follow standard metro configurations used across the Barcelona system, and services are scheduled to provide short headways during daytime and peak periods.

Operations and passenger use

Line 4 operates daily with frequent daytime service and typically reduced frequencies at night. It carries a mix of regular commuters, shoppers and visitors travelling between residential districts, business areas and leisure destinations such as beaches and parks. Ticketing and fare rules are integrated with Barcelona’s metropolitan transport authority, allowing through journeys using the unified fare structure.

Connections and role in the network

L4 provides numerous interchange opportunities with other metro lines, surface trams and regional rail services, helping passengers reach long-distance trains, suburban zones and busy commercial areas. For maps, timetables and service notices consult the Barcelona Metro network page.

History and development

The line was developed in stages over several decades as the city’s transit needs evolved. Sections were added or realigned to respond to urban expansion and major events that reshaped transport priorities. Like other lines, L4 has seen progressive modernization works, including station refurbishments and accessibility improvements to add elevators and step-free access at selected stops.

Future and improvements

Ongoing investment focuses on improving passenger information, accessibility and energy efficiency, with upgrades implemented progressively across the metro network. Any planned extensions or major service changes are published by the operator and transport authority in advance.

Practical notes

  • Recognisable system colour: yellow; wayfinding reflects this on maps and in stations.
  • Mix of underground and overground alignments adapts to local urban form.
  • Integrated fares allow easy transfers within the metropolitan transport area.
