Overview
Line 10 (commonly L10) is one of the two branches of the integrated L9/L10 project in Barcelona's metro network. Conceived as part of a major extension, L10 shares a central trunk with Line 9 before splitting to serve different corridors. The line is designed to connect new and existing neighbourhoods, improve cross-city travel and link residential areas with industrial and port zones.
Route and stations
L10 follows a route planned in stages, with some sections opened to passengers while other segments remain under construction or in planning. Stations on L10 are typically deep-level and designed for high-capacity flows and interchanges with other metro and regional services. Key characteristics of the route include accessibility features, transfer points to other lines, and stations located to serve both urban districts and logistic areas near the waterfront.
Operation and characteristics
The line is operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). It is part of the modern L9/L10 system that uses automated, driverless train operation and platform screen doors at stations. Trains run frequently on opened sections, and the infrastructure emphasizes safety, energy efficiency and rapid passenger exchange. Typical features are deep bored tunnels, elevators and escalators for station access, and real-time passenger information systems.
Construction and development
Construction of L10 has proceeded in phases due to technical complexity, urban constraints and funding considerations. Building deep stations in built-up areas required careful engineering to manage ground conditions and to minimize disruption. The project has been developed over many years with sequential openings rather than a single launch, allowing parts of the line to enter service as work continued elsewhere.
Significance and future
L10 is significant for expanding public-transport coverage, reducing road congestion and improving links to employment and port areas. As remaining sections are completed and integrated, the branch will strengthen the wider L9/L10 network and offer faster, more direct journeys across Barcelona. Future work focuses on finishing construction, optimizing service patterns and enhancing multimodal connections.
