Sergio Zaniboni — Italian comics artist and illustrator (1937–2017)

Career and major collaborations

Zaniboni is especially remembered for illustrating numerous episodes of Diabolik, the long‑running Italian crime comic created in the early 1960s. His work on Diabolik brought him national recognition and associated his name with the series' shadowy, suspenseful tone. Beginning in 1972 Zaniboni also worked regularly for the Catholic weekly comic magazine Il Giornalino.

For Il Giornalino he produced the boxing drama Il Campione, written by Alberto Ongaro, and the police series Tenente Marlo, with stories by Claudio Nizzi. These collaborations demonstrated Zaniboni's ability to adapt to different genres — from sports realism to procedural noir — while maintaining clear storytelling and evocative imagery.

Artistic style and approach

Zaniboni's artwork combined realistic figure drawing with attentive page composition. Commentators and readers have noted his skill at rendering facial expressions, physical action and urban nightscapes that supported suspenseful narratives.
