Bandipore district (also spelled Bandipora) is an administrative district in the Kashmir Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. The district headquarters is the town of Bandipora, which serves as the main commercial and administrative centre. For official information and district resources see Bandipore district.
Geography and environment
Bandipore lies in the northern part of the Kashmir Valley and includes lowland plains around the Jhelum River as well as highland areas that rise toward the Pir Panjal and Karakoram foothills. One of the district's defining natural features is Wular Lake, a large freshwater lake that supports fisheries, reed beds and migratory birds. The Gurez valley, a high-altitude valley within the district, is shaped by the Kishanganga (Neelum) River and is noted for alpine meadows and traditional villages.
History and administration
The district is part of the long-settled Kashmir region and shares the valley's cultural and historical ties. In contemporary administration it functions as a district with local government bodies and tehsils that manage civic services, land records and development programs. The town of Bandipora is the centre for district-level administration, courts and government offices.
Economy and society
The local economy is largely rural. Agriculture, horticulture and livestock are important livelihoods, supplemented by freshwater fisheries from Wular Lake and small-scale trade in towns. Seasonal tourism to scenic areas such as Gurez and birdwatching around the lake contributes to incomes. The population is predominantly Kashmiri-speaking and follows cultural patterns common across the valley, including traditional crafts, markets and local festivals.
Places of interest and notes

- Wular Lake — major freshwater lake and wildlife habitat.
- Gurez valley — high-altitude valley known for scenery and local culture.
- Kishanganga/Neelum River corridor — important for hydrology and local livelihoods.
Conservation and sustainable development are recurrent themes for the district because of the ecological importance of the lake and mountain landscapes. Improved road links to Srinagar and neighbouring districts support trade and access to services, while community initiatives seek to balance tourism, fisheries and agriculture with environmental protection.
