San Juan County is a sparsely populated county composed mainly of islands in the Salish Sea off the northwest coast of the continental United States. The county is part of Washington and of the United States. Its administrative center is Friday Harbor, the county seat and principal town. At the 2010 census the county reported a population of 15,769, and it remains one of the smaller counties in Washington by population. The county name and basic boundary information are often summarized in regional overviews and travel guides (San Juan County).
Geography and islands
San Juan County consists of an archipelago of large and small islands, many of which are only seasonally occupied. The principal inhabited islands include San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island and Shaw Island, among several dozen smaller islands and islets. Marine channels, sheltered inlets and rocky shorelines define the local landscape, supporting a rich marine ecosystem, diverse birdlife and intertidal habitats.
History and settlement
The islands were originally home to Coast Salish peoples who used the waters and shorelines for fishing and travel. European and American settlement increased in the 19th century, driven by maritime trade, fishing and later by tourism and summer residency. Over time the islands developed small towns, farms and maritime facilities while much of the land remained rural or conserved.
Communities and population
Friday Harbor is the largest incorporated community and the county seat, offering services, museums and ferry connections. Other population centers are scattered villages and seasonal communities on the larger islands. The county's population is relatively small year-round but grows in summer as visitors and seasonal residents arrive.
Economy, transportation and recreation
The local economy relies heavily on tourism, boating, fishing, small-scale agriculture and arts services. Whale watching, kayaking, hiking and cycling are popular recreational activities. Transportation between islands and the mainland is provided by passenger and vehicle ferries, water taxis and small aircraft; ferry schedules and private carriers are central to daily life and commerce.
Conservation and government
A mix of county, state and private lands is managed to balance development with conservation. Parks, marine preserves and protected shorelines aim to safeguard wildlife and scenic values. Local government focuses on managing services, land use and natural-resource protection appropriate to a small, dispersed island population.
