Salvatore Senese (3 April 1935 – 17 June 2019) was an Italian magistrate and politician. Trained in the judicial profession, he later took public office as a representative of the Democratic Party of the Left. Over the 1990s he served in both chambers of the Italian Parliament, combining experience from the bench with legislative work and public service. For information about his judicial background see magistrate references.
Early life and legal career
Senese was born in Tarsia, in the southern region of Calabria. His early professional life was rooted in the Italian legal system; magistrates in Italy perform investigative and judicial roles and often shape legal practice through court decisions. Although specific early postings are not listed here, his background in the judiciary provided the technical and institutional knowledge that later informed his political activity and public statements about law and administration. See the town of origin at Tarsia.
Parliamentary service and party affiliation
After entering politics, Senese represented his constituents first in the Chamber of Deputies from 1992 to 1994 and subsequently as a Senator for two terms from 1994 to 2001. His time in the lower house is recorded in the official lists of deputies (Chamber of Deputies), while his later service appears in Senate records (Senate). He was aligned with the Democratic Party of the Left, a centre-left formation that emerged from the Italian political shifts of the early 1990s.
The 1990s were a period of institutional change and political realignment in Italy, when many public figures from the legal profession engaged directly in politics. Senese’s dual experience in law and legislation placed him among those who sought to translate judicial expertise into policy and oversight roles within Parliament.
Senese died on 17 June 2019 in Prato, a city in the region of Tuscany, at the age of 84. Local notices and remembrances record his passing and the end of a career that bridged magistracy and elected office; see Prato and the regional context of Tuscany.
