Sainte-Marguerite-des-Loges was a small rural commune in northwestern France. Administratively it belonged to the historical region of Basse-Normandie and the department of Calvados. On 1 January 2016 the municipality ceased to exist as an independent entity when it was merged into the new commune of Livarot-Pays-d'Auge. It is commonly described in French sources as a former commune; see a local notice at official commune page.

Geography and setting

Located in the Pays d'Auge, a gently rolling agricultural district of Normandy, Sainte-Marguerite-des-Loges lies amid pastures, apple orchards and hedged fields. The landscape is typical of the area: bocage patterns, small lanes and dispersed farmsteads that support dairy and cider production common to this part of France.

Character and built heritage

The locality exemplifies regional rural architecture, with timber-framed houses, stone farm buildings and a parish church at its centre. These elements reflect centuries of small-scale farming and local building traditions. While the former commune was modest in size, it contributed to the cultural fabric of the Pays d'Auge.

Economy and cultural importance

Economic activity in and around Sainte-Marguerite-des-Loges has historically centred on mixed agriculture: dairy herds, cheese-making (the nearby town of Livarot gives its name to a well-known cheese), apple orchards for cider and calvados, and small-scale crop production. The area is also visited for rural tourism and scenic drives through Normandy countryside.

Administration and modern status

As part of the 2015–2016 territorial reforms in France, many small communes merged to form larger administrative entities to pool services and governance. Sainte-Marguerite-des-Loges became one of several communes incorporated into Livarot-Pays-d'Auge.
