Geography and landscape

The locality was set in the Normandy bocage — a patchwork of small fields, hedgerows and pasture that shapes much of inland Calvados. History and administration

Sainte-Marie-Laumont functioned as an independent commune under France’s long-standing municipal system. On 1 January 2016 it was incorporated into the newly created commune of Souleuvre-en-Bocage, part of a national trend of merging small communes to simplify administration and share services. The area had previously been administered within the structures of the Calvados department and the former region of Basse-Normandie.

Like many small Norman villages, the local economy traditionally centered on agriculture, with dairy, cider apples and mixed crops common across Calvados.
