Saint Andrew is a parish on the southeastern side of Jamaica that forms much of the Kingston metropolitan area. The parish capital is Half Way Tree, a major commercial and transport hub. Saint Andrew is administratively paired with the neighbouring Kingston parish under the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC), and it lies within the historic county of Surrey. For official information see the parish page at Saint Andrew parish.
Geography and character
Saint Andrew ranges from densely populated urban neighborhoods that blend into Kingston to suburban residential districts and higher-elevation rural areas. The western and central parts are heavily built-up, while the eastern slopes rise toward the Blue Mountains, offering cooler climates and rural landscapes. The parish contains a mix of commercial centres, residential suburbs and natural reserves.
History and development
Like many Jamaican parishes, Saint Andrew has colonial roots and a history connected to plantation agriculture, trade and urban growth. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the parish urbanized as Kingston expanded; today Saint Andrew hosts both long-established communities and newer developments that serve the capital region.
Economy, education and services
The parish combines commercial districts, professional services, light industry and significant educational institutions. Notable centres for education and health are located in the Mona area. Public and private enterprises, markets and retail corridors around Half Way Tree and New Kingston contribute substantially to the local economy.
Notable places and transport
- Half Way Tree — parish capital and transport interchange
- Mona — campus and institutional district
- New Kingston — business and entertainment precinct
- Blue Mountain foothills — rural and recreational areas
Road networks and frequent public transport tie Saint Andrew to Kingston and to the rest of the island; local planning and municipal services are often coordinated through the KSAC framework. For regional context see the county overview at Surrey.
