Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本 龍一, 17 January 1952–28 March 2023) was a Japanese composer, pianist, keyboardist and music producer whose work ranged from pioneering electronic pop to orchestral film scores and experimental collaborations. He came to wide attention as a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and later as a solo artist and film composer. In Japanese name order the family name is shown first: see Japanese naming conventions, name order and the family name Sakamoto.

Early career and Yellow Magic Orchestra

Sakamoto trained as a pianist and studied composition and electronic techniques before forming Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) in the late 1970s with fellow musicians. YMO blended synthesizers, sequencers and pop structures, helping to popularize synth-driven styles that influenced later electronic, hip-hop and techno artists. The group combined sharp studio production with a playful aesthetic, and Sakamoto’s keyboard work and arranging were central to its sound.

Musical style and approach

Sakamoto’s music is notable for its mixture of acoustic and electronic elements, clear melodic lines and attention to timbre. He moved freely among genres—ambient, classical, pop, avant-garde and soundtrack composition—often combining piano and orchestral textures with synthesized tones and field recordings. His compositional approach favored restraint, clarity and the use of silence as a structural element.

Film scores and notable works

As a film composer Sakamoto gained international recognition for scores that complemented cinematic narrative while retaining distinctive musical identities. His soundtrack work brought him broader audiences and critical honors. Representative projects include scores for dramatic films and collaborations with prominent directors, and several of his themes became widely known outside film contexts.

Collaborations, performances and legacy

Throughout his career Sakamoto collaborated with other musicians, producers and visual artists across styles—from pop and rock to experimental electronic artists. In the 2000s and 2010s he pursued intimate duo recordings and interdisciplinary projects that explored the intersection of sound, technology and space. His influence is evident in contemporary electronic and ambient music and in film scoring practices that favor hybrid orchestral-electronic textures.

Recognition and later life

Sakamoto received international awards and honors during his life and was widely regarded as a bridge between popular and art music in Japan and abroad. In later years he spoke publicly on social and environmental issues and continued to perform and record despite health challenges. His body of work is remembered for technical curiosity, melodic sensitivity and a persistent willingness to experiment.
