Ruy López de Segura

Major work and openings

In 1561 López published a treatise on chess that collected rules, problems, and analysis of play. Within his analysis he examined an opening beginning 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5, a line now known as the Ruy López. Modern sources credit him with early systematic study of that sequence, and later writers adopted his name for the opening. The sequence is commonly written as 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5.
