Ronald J. Kurth

Early life and formation

Kurth was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He trained as a naval aviator and later developed specialized expertise in Russian studies and foreign area analysis. His linguistic skills and regional knowledge distinguished him from many contemporaries in uniform, enabling assignments that bridged operational and academic communities.

Naval career and service

Across a multi-decade career he served in both seaborne and shore billets during the height of the Cold War. Kurth’s experience included carrier aviation and other fleet duties as well as staff work dealing with strategy and international affairs. He also served during the period of the Vietnam War, which shaped U.S. naval operations and planning in the 1960s and 1970s.

Kurth was known as a Russian area studies scholar and was fluent in the Russian language. His academic orientation led to prominent educational leadership roles; he finished his naval career with senior assignments in the 1980s and served as President of the Naval War College from 1987 to 1990, a post that combined teaching, curriculum development and strategic thought.
