Ronald "Ron" Suart (18 November 1920 – 25 March 2015) was an English professional football player and later a manager and coach. Best known as a reliable full‑back in the immediate post‑war era, Suart combined defensive consistency with the stamina required of wide defenders in the 1940s and early 1950s. His career is often recalled in connection with Blackpool’s strong side of the late 1940s and the well‑known names who featured alongside him.

Playing career and characteristics

Suart spent the most prominent years of his playing career at Blackpool, where he formed part of a defensive group that included players such as George Farrow and Harry Johnston. He provided dependable defending and positional awareness typical of full‑backs of his era, a period when defenders were expected to be tough in the tackle and disciplined in marking. Suart was part of a squad that also featured attacking stars like Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen, giving the team a balance of defensive solidity and attacking flair.

1948 FA Cup Final

One of the high points for Blackpool during Suart’s time was reaching the 1948 FA Cup Final. Suart, however, missed the final itself because of injury, an unfortunate setback in what was otherwise a notable run for the club. Reaching the final reflected the strength of Blackpool’s squad in the immediate post‑war years and remains a significant milestone in the club’s history.

Later playing years and retirement

In 1949 Suart moved to Blackburn Rovers, where he continued as a first‑class professional until retiring from playing in 1955. His career spanned the transitional period from wartime football into the modern post‑war Football League, and his longevity demonstrated both physical resilience and adaptability to changing styles of play.

Coaching, management and legacy

After retiring as a player Suart remained involved in the game in coaching and managerial roles. He is remembered as part of a generation of professionals who moved from playing into backroom and managerial positions, helping to pass on knowledge to younger players and contributing to club structures off the pitch. Though not as famous as some of his attacking contemporaries, Suart’s steady presence at full‑back and later work in management made him a respected figure in English football circles.

Suart lived to the age of 94, passing away in March 2015. His career is cited in histories of Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers as an example of the committed, workmanlike defenders who formed the backbone of post‑war teams in England.
