Rockland County is a suburban county in the U.S. state of New York, located on the west bank of the Hudson River roughly 20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. Home to about 300,000 residents, the county combines dense, built-up villages and hamlets with stretches of parks, cliffs and waterfront. New City serves as the county seat and Spring Valley is the largest incorporated village.
Towns and communities
- Orangetown
- Clarkstown
- Haverstraw
- Stony Point
- Ramapo
These five towns are subdivided into numerous hamlets and villages; local government functions and services are distributed among town halls and village administrations. Communities vary from suburban neighborhoods and shopping corridors to quieter, semi-rural areas along conservation land and riverfront.
Geographically, Rockland is defined by its position along the lower Hudson River and the rise of the Hudson Palisades. The topography includes rocky bluffs, wooded slopes and shoreline parks that offer hiking, boating and scenic views. Its location immediately across the river from Westchester County and just north of New Jersey shapes much of the county's character as a commuter and recreational zone.
Rockland's history predates European settlement, with Indigenous peoples such as Lenape living and traveling through the area. European colonization by Dutch and English settlers transformed the landscape into farms, villages and shipping points. The county was established from parts of an adjacent county near the end of the 18th century and expanded into a suburban region throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as transportation links to New York City improved.
Transportation and the local economy are closely linked to the county's proximity to New York City. Many residents commute by road and public transit to jobs in the metropolitan area; within the county, retail, professional services, light industry and institutions provide employment. Rockland maintains parks, historic sites and community facilities that support tourism and local recreation.
Culturally, Rockland is diverse. Several communities are noted for significant religious and ethnic concentrations that have shaped local schools, businesses and civic life. The county supports minor league and amateur sports teams — including the Rockland Boulders — festivals, museums and performance venues.
