Perched on south-facing slopes, the built area is compact and many parts of the visitor village are car-free, giving Riederalp a tranquil atmosphere. History and municipal structure

The present municipality was created on 1 November 2003, when the former municipalities of Goppisberg, Greich and Ried-Mörel merged to form the modern administrative unit. The community’s development reflects traditional alpine farming alongside a growing emphasis on mountain tourism since the 20th century.

Tourism is the dominant economic activity. In winter, groomed slopes and cross-country trails attract skiers and snowshoers; in summer, the area is favored for hiking, alpine walking and scenic viewpoints leading toward the Aletsch Glacier, part of a protected landscape.
