Overview

Richland County is a rural county located in the eastern part of the Montana region of the United States. According to the 2010 United States Census, the county had 9,746 residents. The administrative center and largest town is the Sidney, which serves as the area's primary hub for services and commerce and is designated as the county seat (county seat).

Geography and climate

Richland County lies near the Montana–North Dakota border and features broad agricultural plains typical of the northern Great Plains. The landscape is largely open farmland and grassland, punctuated by small river valleys and irrigation infrastructure. Summers are warm and short, while winters are cold and dry, reflecting the continental climate of eastern Montana. The county's low population density and expansive fields make it primarily rural in character.

Economy and land use

The local economy is rooted in agriculture, including grains, oilseeds and livestock operations, which make up much of the land use. In recent decades energy development in the regional oil formations has supplemented farm incomes and stimulated population and business growth at times. Sidney functions as a regional center for trade, health care, education, and transportation for residents of the county and nearby towns.

History and population

Richland County developed as settlers moved onto the plains for farming and ranching in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its population has remained relatively small and dispersed, with periodic increases tied to agricultural markets and energy booms. Communities here retain a rural character, and local institutions reflect the agricultural heritage and community-oriented nature of the county.

Communities and transportation

The county is served by Sidney and several smaller towns and unincorporated settlements that provide local services, schools and community facilities. Transportation is based on regional highways that link farms and towns to markets, and a small local airport and freight connections support business and agricultural needs. Outdoor recreation, including hunting and fishing opportunities in nearby waterways and public lands, attracts some seasonal visitors.
