Overview

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a United States Air Force supersonic fighter-bomber developed in the 1950s by Republic Aviation. Conceived to deliver tactical nuclear weapons at high speed, it entered service in the late 1950s and later became a primary conventional strike aircraft early in the Vietnam War. Design and characteristics

The F-105 was a large, single-seat, single-engine aircraft optimized for high-speed, low- to medium-altitude penetration. It combined a streamlined fuselage with internal fuel capacity and a substantial external weapons-carrying capability. The basic design emphasized range, speed, and a heavy weapons load rather than air-to-air maneuverability.

As threats from enemy radar and surface-to-air missiles increased, some Thunderchiefs were converted into specialized suppression-of-enemy-air-defenses (SEAD) platforms known as Wild Weasels. The modified F-105s carried electronic warfare gear and anti-radiation missiles to locate and attack enemy radar emitters.
