Geography and climate

The district lies between the plains around Jammu and the higher Himalayan ranges to the north. Its topography features narrow valleys, terraced agricultural land and river valleys that contribute to larger river systems downstream. Climatic conditions vary with elevation: lower valleys experience milder winters while upland areas see colder winters and occasional snowfall. Forests are an important ecological component and support local livelihoods.

Reasi district is closely associated with the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. The town of Katra, within the district, serves as the principal base for the large number of pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine; pilgrimage traffic supports hotels, shops, transport services and local trade. Beyond religious tourism, the district attracts visitors for scenic walks, trekking routes, river valleys and seasonal festivals typical of hill communities.

Society and culture

The population is culturally diverse, with languages such as Dogri and Urdu commonly spoken alongside Pahari and other local dialects. Social life reflects agrarian customs and religious traditions; community festivals and markets remain important to local identity. Public services such as schools and health centres have been gradually expanded to serve dispersed rural settlements.
