Overview
Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital of Malaysia, created as a planned city to house national government ministries and agencies. It functions as a Federal Territory and serves as the principal location for the federal civil service while remaining close to the national commercial and cultural hub of Kuala Lumpur, to the south of which it lies (Kuala Lumpur).
Design and layout
The city was master-planned with wide boulevards, civic precincts, and abundant green spaces. Its design mixes contemporary urban planning with Malay-Islamic architectural influences. Government complexes, administrative blocks and residential neighbourhoods are arranged around a large man-made lake that forms a visual and recreational centre.
History and development
Putrajaya emerged from a national decision to decentralize administrative functions and reduce congestion in Kuala Lumpur. Built largely on reclaimed land and former rubber estates, the city’s development followed a phased program of construction that established it as the seat for many federal ministries and official buildings.
Role and institutions
As the administrative capital, Putrajaya hosts prime ministerial and ministerial offices, government departments and diplomatic missions. It is an operational centre for policy-making, public administration, and national ceremonies, though some parliamentary and commercial functions remain in or near Kuala Lumpur.
Notable features and transport
- Landmarks include prominent government complexes, a signature mosque, and several architecturally notable bridges that cross the central lake.
- The city emphasizes parklands, pedestrian paths and planned transit links connecting it to greater metropolitan areas.
- Public events, conferences and official ceremonies frequently take place on its ceremonial avenues and public plazas.
Putrajaya is often cited as an example of a late-20th-century planned administrative capital: a purpose-built seat of government intended to combine efficient public administration with a controlled urban environment and landscaped setting.
