Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital of Malaysia, created as a planned city to house national government ministries and agencies. It functions as a Federal Territory and serves as the principal location for the federal civil service while remaining close to the national commercial and cultural hub of Kuala Lumpur, to the south of which it lies (Kuala Lumpur).

Design and layout

The city was master-planned with wide boulevards, civic precincts, and abundant green spaces. Its design mixes contemporary urban planning with Malay-Islamic architectural influences. Government complexes, administrative blocks and residential neighbourhoods are arranged around a large man-made lake that forms a visual and recreational centre.

Putrajaya emerged from a national decision to decentralize administrative functions and reduce congestion in Kuala Lumpur. Built largely on reclaimed land and former rubber estates, the city’s development followed a phased program of construction that established it as the seat for many federal ministries and official buildings.
