Overview

Pully is a municipality in the district Lavaux-Oron of the canton Vaud (Vaud) in Switzerland. It lies immediately east of the city of Lausanne, on the northern shore of Lake Geneva and at the lower slopes of the terraced vineyards of Lavaux. The municipality functions largely as an eastern suburb of Lausanne while retaining its own residential neighborhoods, shoreline promenade and pockets of viticulture. Major nearby towns reached by the lakeside road include Vevey and Montreux.

Geography and environment

Pully occupies a transition zone from lakeshore to hillside. The shore offers promenades and small harbors, while the slope above is characterized by the carefully arranged terraces and small vineyards that form part of the Lavaux landscape. The position between lake and vine terraces creates a pleasant microclimate and scenic views toward the Alps and the city of Lausanne.

History and development

The area around Pully has been settled for many centuries and developed in close relationship with Lausanne. Historically the local economy combined fishing, small-scale farming and viticulture. Over time Pully became more suburban as Lausanne expanded; today it blends historic village streets with modern residential quarters. The adjacent Lavaux terraces are of particular historical interest and are recognised for their cultural landscape.

Transport, economy and services

Pully benefits from extensive transport connections: regional rail and bus services link it to Lausanne and other lakeside towns, while road routes connect to Vevey and Montreux. The local economy is mixed—service industries, retail, commuter households and continued wine-growing on the slopes. Lakeside recreation, cafés and small hotels support tourism, especially from visitors exploring the vineyards and scenic promenades.

Culture, amenities and notable facts

As a suburban municipality it offers schools, sports clubs and community facilities, and residents often use Lausanne for larger cultural institutions and hospitals. Pully's shoreline, public parks and walking routes into the Lavaux terraces are valued amenities. The surrounding Lavaux vineyard landscape is a well-known cultural attraction and draws walkers, wine enthusiasts and visitors to the region.
