Geography and economy

The landscape of the area combined stretches of fertile lowland plain with rolling hills and a mix of cultivated fields, orchards and pasture. Agriculture and pastoralism have traditionally formed the backbone of the local economy, with many municipalities oriented towards crop cultivation, livestock and small-scale food processing. History and administration

Medio Campidano was established by regional statute in the 2000s to provide closer local administration for communities in the central-southern plain. The province included a number of small and medium-sized municipalities and had an administrative seat in one of its principal towns. In the mid-2010s the region again reorganized provincial boundaries and functions: the former province's responsibilities and territory were incorporated into a larger provincial entity as part of an island-wide reform of local government.

Local life reflects a mix of Italian and Sardinian traditions, with the Campidanese dialect of Sardinian widely spoken alongside Italian. Archaeological remains from prehistoric Nuragic culture can be found in many parts of Sardinia, and the former province contained local churches, rural architecture and community festivals that reflect a long continuity of settlement and land use.
