The Propædia is the single-volume guidebook that forms one part of the 15th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. It accompanies the encyclopedia's two other components: the multi-volume Micropædia (short articles) and the extensive Macropædia (longer treatments). The Propædia was created to give readers a systematic overview of the subjects covered in Britannica and to serve as a roadmap to the other parts.

Origins and later changes

Introduced in 1974 with the 15th edition, the Propædia was intended to replace a conventional printed index by offering an organized classification of knowledge and directions to related entries. The plan for the Propædia’s central feature, the Outline of Knowledge, was developed under the direction of philosopher Mortimer Adler and other advisers. The decision to remove the traditional index proved controversial; following criticism, Britannica restored an index as a two-volume supplement in 1985.

Contents and function

The Propædia’s principal element is the Outline of Knowledge, a hierarchical arrangement of fields and topics that is prefaced by short introductory essays for each major division. In addition to the Outline, the volume includes lists of editorial staff, named contributors and advisory board members associated with the Britannica project, and cross-references intended to help users move between overview topics and specific articles in the Micropædia and the Macropædia.

How readers use it

As a practical tool, the Propædia is meant to help someone decide what topics they should study and to locate the relevant encyclopedia articles. A reader can scan the Outline to identify the area of interest, follow the cross-references to find concise or more detailed treatments, and consult the contributor lists for authorship and editorial information.

Status and availability

The Propædia has remained part of Britannica’s 15th-edition framework in subsequent printings and its organizational principles have influenced the encyclopedia’s online presentation. While the printed index was reintroduced, the Propædia continues to be cited as Britannica’s formal statement of topical structure and educational orientation.
