Selection and term

The president is chosen by the Saeima, Latvia's unicameral parliament (head of state election process), in a parliamentary vote. The term length is four years; the holder may stand for re-election according to the constitution and prevailing law. The oath and formal assumption of duties follow the parliamentary vote.

Constitutional powers

Although the role is often described as primarily representative, the presidency carries concrete powers and safeguards. Typical functions include:

• nominating a prime ministerial candidate and consulting with parliamentary groups;
• signing or returning legislation (a suspensive veto that parliament can override);
• granting pardons and conferring state honors;
• serving as the state's commander-in-chief with duties defined by law.

In practice the president can influence constitutional moments, mediate political disputes and shape foreign-policy visibility while not directing daily government policy.

History and notable aspects

The office dates to Latvia's independence in the early 20th century, was interrupted during mid-century occupations, and was restored with the country's renewed independence. The presidency differs from directly elected heads of state in other countries: it is a parliamentary selection intended to provide a unifying, non-partisan figure able to represent the state and protect the constitutional order.
