Design and insignia

The decoration is a blue-enameled Maltese cross with a central medallion bearing the French motto "Pour le Mérite" ("For Merit"). It was traditionally worn at the neck by officers. The distinctive blue enamel and form made it immediately recognizable and contributed to its popular nickname.

History and development

Established in the 18th century by the Prussian monarchy, the Pour le Mérite served as a military order for officers who demonstrated outstanding leadership or bravery. In the 19th century a civil class was created to honor achievements in the arts and sciences; that civil branch would survive after the end of the monarchy as an independent society.
