Poschiavo occupies a valley that runs south from the central Alps toward the border with Italy. The village lies above and around Lago di Poschiavo, a long alpine lake located to the south of the main settlement. The landscape combines steep mountain slopes, cultivated terraces and mixed forests. The valley’s elevations and its southern exposure give it a milder microclimate than many high Alpine zones, which has influenced land use and local building styles.
Language, culture and architecture
Italian is the dominant spoken language and cultural influence, but German and Romansh traditions are also present because of Graubünden’s multilingual heritage. Traditional Poschiavo villages show Lombard and Alpine architectural elements: stone foundations, wooden upper stories and narrow streets that reflect centuries of mountain settlement and cross-border ties with Lombardy in Italy.
History and transport
The valley has long served as a southward route through the Alps and was shaped by medieval trade and local agrarian economies. Modern access improved markedly with the construction of roads and the arrival of the Rhaetian Railway’s Bernina line in the early 20th century. The Albula/Bernina railway network, which includes the Bernina line running through the Poschiavo valley, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site; this rail link connects Swiss mountain resorts to Tirano in Italy and is a major artery for visitors and local traffic.
Economy and recreation
Poschiavo’s economy mixes agriculture, forestry, small industry, services and tourism. Visitors come for hiking, cycling, winter sports in nearby passes, and lakeside walks around Lago di Poschiavo. The valley is used for pastoral farming, orchards and vineyards in sheltered spots, and the surrounding mountains support seasonal outdoor activities and nature tourism.
